Technical Abstract

A user recovers and records multiple programs communicated simultaneously using a communications channel, e.g., QAM communications channel. The simultaneous communication may be by communicating, e.g., an MPEG-2 transport stream including data corresponding to multiple programs through a corresponding to QAM communications channel. Thus a user device, e.g., a set top box, is able to receive and record programs corresponding to multiple simultaneously broadcast programs using a single tuner. This allows a device to receive and record or display more programs at any given time, than the number of QAM tuners and/or receivers in the user device. Novel user interface features which facilitate a user's ability to identify and record multiple programs corresponding to a QAM channel are also described. Methods and apparatus for determining program to communication channel mappings based on user program recordation information are also described.

1

1. A method of operating a system used for recording and playback of programs, the method comprising: displaying, on a display device, a list of available programs, said list of available programs including a set of programs corresponding to a third QAM communications channel which are available for recording but which have not been selected for recording, none of the set of programs corresponding to the third communications channel having been selected for recording, said list including programs in channel number order; and including in said displayed list a first group indicator indicating a first group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said first group of programs corresponding to a first QAM communications channel; and including in said displayed list a second group indicator indicating a second group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said second group of programs corresponding to a second QAM communications channel, said list of available programs including programs in said second group of programs corresponding to the second QAM communications channel interspaced between programs in said first group of programs corresponding to said first QAM communications channel.

2

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first and second group indicators are displayed colors used to distinguish different groups of programs which can be recorded simultaneously from one another.

3

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said system includes a fixed number of QAM tuners capable of tuning to different QAM channels, the method further comprising: receiving a plurality of requests to record programs during a first period of time; and determining the QAM channels to which the programs requested to be recorded correspond; and recording programs corresponding to a number of different channels, said number of different channels being less than or equal to the fixed number of QAM tuners.

4

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: indicating, on said displayed list of available programs, that a program can not be recorded when said program corresponds to a channel from which a program has not already been selected to be recorded and the number of channels from which programs to be recorded already matches said fixed number of QAM tuners.

5

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: displaying an updated list of available programs when the number of different QAM channels on which programs are to be recorded simultaneously during a period of time matches the fixed number of QAM tuners, said updated list of available programs indicating that only programs corresponding to the different QAM channels on which programs have already been selected for simultaneous recording are available for recording during said period of time.

6

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising: indicating on said updated list of available programs, programs which have been selected for recording.

7

7. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: receiving program to QAM channel mapping information.

8

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said program to QAM channel mapping information is communicated with program guide information.

9

9. A recording and playback system, comprising: a display device; and a set top box comprising a processor configured to: control said set top box to display, on said display device, a list of available programs, said list of available programs including a set of programs corresponding to a third QAM communications channel which are available for recording but which have not been selected for recording, none of the set of programs corresponding to the third QAM communications channel having been selected for recording, said list including programs in channel number order; include in said displayed list a first group indicator indicating a first group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said first group of programs corresponding to a first QAM communications channel; and include in said displayed list a second group indicator indicating a second group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said second group of programs corresponding to a second QAM communications channel, said list of available programs including programs in said second group of programs corresponding to the second QAM communications channel interspaced between programs in said first group of programs corresponding to said first QAM communications channel.

10

10. The recording and playback system of claim 9 , wherein said first and second group indicators are displayed colors used to distinguish different groups of programs which can be recorded simultaneously from one another.

11

11. The recording and playback system of claim 9 , wherein said set top box includes a fixed number of QAM tuners capable of tuning to different QAM channels; and wherein the processor is further configured to: receive a plurality of requests to record programs during a first period of time; and determine the QAM channels to which the programs requested to be recorded correspond; and wherein the system further comprises: a recording device configured to record programs corresponding to a number of different channels, said number of different channels being less than or equal to the fixed number of QAM tuners.

12

12. The recording and playback system of claim 11 , wherein said processor is further configured to indicate, on said displayed list of available programs, that a program can not be recorded when said program corresponds to a channel from which a program has not already been selected to be recorded and the number of channels from which programs to be recorded already matches said fixed number of QAM tuners.

13

13. The recording and playback system of claim 11 , wherein said processor is further configured to control said display device to display an updated list of available programs when the number of different QAM channels on which programs are to be recorded simultaneously during a period of time matches the fixed number of QAM tuners, said updated list of available programs indicating that only programs corresponding to the different QAM channels on which programs have already been selected for simultaneous recording are available for recording during said period of time.

14

14. The recording and playback system of claim 11 , wherein said recording device is included as part of the set top box.

15

15. A non-transitory machine-readable medium including executable instructions which when executed by a processor control a recording and playback apparatus to: display, on a display device, a list of available programs, said list of available programs including a set of programs corresponding to a third QAM communications channel which are available for recording but which have not been selected for recording, none of the set of programs corresponding to the third communications channel having been selected for recording, said list including programs in channel number order; and include in said displayed list a first group indicator indicating a first group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said first group of programs corresponding to a first QAM communications channel; and include in said displayed list a second group indicator indicating a second group of programs available for simultaneous recording, said second group of programs corresponding to a second QAM communications channel, said list of available programs including programs in said second group of programs corresponding to the second QAM communications channel interspaced between programs in said first group of programs corresponding to said first QAM communications channel.

16

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein said first and second group indicators are displayed colors used to distinguish different groups of programs which can be recorded simultaneously from one another.
