Example embodiments presented herein are directed towards a device, mobility management node and/or a serving gateway, and corresponding methods there, for providing application, service or priority based paging. According to some of the example embodiments, the decision whether or not to issue or accept a paging request may be made based on a priority, application or service (or type of service) associated with the paging request.
Legal claims defining the scope of protection. Each claim is shown in both the original legal language and a plain English translation.
1. A method, in a Serving Gateway (SGW), for handling priority, service or application based paging, the SGW being comprised in a wireless communications network, the method comprising: the SGW receiving, from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), a user plane packet for a user equipment (UE), the user plane packet comprising a Service Class Indicator (SCI); the SGW receiving, from a mobility management node (MMN), a support indicator indicating whether the MMN supports handling or paging based on SCI information; the SGW determining that a condition is true, wherein determining that the condition is true comprises determining that the support indicator indicates that the MMN supports handling or paging based on SCI information; and in response to determining that the condition is true; the SGW sending, to the MMN, a downlink data notification message on a control plane, said downlink data notification comprising the received SCI or a reference to the SCI, wherein the MMN is one of: a Mobility Management Entity (MME) and a Serving General Packet Radio Service Support Node (SGSN).
A Serving Gateway (SGW) in a wireless network handles application-based paging. The SGW receives a data packet for a user device (UE) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW). This packet contains a Service Class Indicator (SCI) specifying the application type. The SGW also receives a support indicator from a mobility management node (MMN), such as a Mobility Management Entity (MME) or Serving General Packet Radio Service Support Node (SGSN), indicating whether the MMN can handle paging based on SCI. If the MMN supports SCI-based paging, the SGW sends a downlink data notification message to the MMN, including the SCI or a reference to it, to trigger paging of the UE based on the application.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user plane packet comprises a General Packet Radio Service Tunnelling Protocol-User Plane (GTP-U) extension header.
The method for application-based paging described previously (SGW receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) for a user equipment (UE) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW); SGW checks if a Mobility Management Node (MMN) supports SCI-based paging; if supported, SGW sends a downlink data notification with the SCI to the MMN) involves the user plane packet containing the SCI information within a General Packet Radio Service Tunnelling Protocol-User Plane (GTP-U) extension header. This GTP-U extension header provides a standardized way to include the SCI within the data packet for efficient and reliable transmission.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support indicator indicates a capability of priority, service or application based messaging and/or paging.
In the application-based paging method (SGW receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) for a user equipment (UE) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW); SGW checks if a Mobility Management Node (MMN) supports SCI-based paging; if supported, SGW sends a downlink data notification with the SCI to the MMN), the support indicator from the Mobility Management Node (MMN) signals the MMN's ability to handle messaging or paging based on application priority, specific service type, or general application-based information. This indicator confirms the MMN can differentiate and handle paging requests according to service-specific needs.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the condition is true further comprises determining whether the UE is in an idle state, and the SGW sends the downlink data notification message to the MMN as a result of determining that the UE is in the idle state and the support indicator indicates that the MMN supports handling or paging based on SCI information.
The method for application-based paging (SGW receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) for a user equipment (UE) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW); SGW checks if a Mobility Management Node (MMN) supports SCI-based paging; if supported, SGW sends a downlink data notification with the SCI to the MMN) further includes a check to determine if the user equipment (UE) is in an idle state. The Serving Gateway (SGW) only sends the downlink data notification message to the Mobility Management Node (MMN) if both conditions are met: the UE is idle AND the support indicator confirms that the MMN supports Service Class Indicator (SCI)-based paging. This ensures paging is only initiated when the UE is not actively communicating.
5. A Serving Gateway (SGW) for handling priority, service or application based paging, the SGW being comprised in a wireless communications network, the SGW being adapted to: receive, from a mobility management node (MMN), a support indicator indicating whether the MMN supports handling or paging based on Service Class Indicator (SCI) information; receive, from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), a user plane packet comprising an SCI; determine that a condition is true, wherein determining that the condition is true comprises determining that the support indicator indicates that the MMN supports handling or paging based on SCI information; and in response to determining that the condition is true, send, to the MMN, a downlink data notification message on a control plane, said downlink data notification comprising the received SCI or a reference to the received SCI, wherein the MMN is one of: a Mobility Management Entity (MME) and a Serving General Packet Radio Service Support Node (SGSN).
A Serving Gateway (SGW) in a wireless network is designed to handle application-based paging. The SGW receives a support indicator from a mobility management node (MMN), such as a Mobility Management Entity (MME) or Serving General Packet Radio Service Support Node (SGSN), indicating whether the MMN can handle paging based on Service Class Indicator (SCI) information. The SGW also receives a data packet containing the SCI from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW). If the MMN supports SCI-based paging according to the support indicator, the SGW sends a downlink data notification message to the MMN, including the received SCI or a reference to it, so that the MMN can page the user equipment based on application requirements.
6. The SGW of claim 5 , wherein the user plane packet comprises a General Packet Radio Service Tunnelling Protocol-User Plane (GTP-U) extension header.
The Serving Gateway (SGW) for application-based paging, which receives a support indicator from a Mobility Management Node (MMN), receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), and sends a downlink data notification message to the MMN if the MMN supports SCI-based paging, receives a user plane packet where the SCI is included in a General Packet Radio Service Tunnelling Protocol-User Plane (GTP-U) extension header. This facilitates efficient SCI transfer.
7. The SGW of claim 5 , wherein the support indicator indicates a capability of priority, service or application based messaging and/or paging.
The Serving Gateway (SGW) for application-based paging, which receives a support indicator from a Mobility Management Node (MMN), receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), and sends a downlink data notification message to the MMN if the MMN supports SCI-based paging, receives a support indicator which indicates the Mobility Management Node's (MMN) capability for priority, service, or application-based messaging and/or paging functionality. This allows service-aware paging.
8. The SGW of claim 5 , wherein the SGW is further configured to determine whether the UE is in an idle state, and the SGW is configured to send the downlink data notification message to the MMN only if the SGW determines that the UE is in the idle state and the support indicator indicates that the MMN supports handling or paging based on SCI information.
The Serving Gateway (SGW) designed for application-based paging (receives a support indicator from a Mobility Management Node (MMN); receives a data packet with Service Class Indicator (SCI) from a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW); sends a downlink data notification message to the MMN if the MMN supports SCI-based paging) checks if the User Equipment (UE) is in an idle state. It only sends the downlink data notification message to the Mobility Management Node (MMN) if the UE is idle AND the MMN supports Service Class Indicator (SCI)-based paging. This conserves network resources by avoiding unnecessary paging.
