1. A game machine, comprising: a bill acceptor that accepts a physical item associated with a monetary value; an input device configured to receive an input representative of a wager amount from a player; a display configured to display a plurality of symbol cells displayed in a grid, the grid defining a plurality of columns, each column having an associated reel, each reel having an associated reel strip, each reel strip including a plurality of symbol positions and a plurality of game symbols displayed in each of the symbol cells in a predetermined order defining a reel layout; and a controller configured to: initiate an instance of a game upon receiving a request from the player via the input device; select a replacement reel layout from a plurality of second reel layouts, each of the second reel layouts having an identical symbol being displayed in each of a plurality of consecutive symbol positions, each second reel layout including a different number of consecutive symbol positions displaying a corresponding identical symbol; and replace a reel layout in at least one reel with the selected replacement reel layout, randomly generate an outcome of the instance of the game using the selected replacement reel layout, and spin and stop the reels to display the outcome; and wherein the controller is further configured to establish a credit balance associated with the monetary value, decrease the credit balance by the wager amount, and enable the player to cash out the credit balance in response to a cash out operation.
A slot machine accepts cash, tracks credits, and allows betting. The game displays symbols in a grid (e.g., 5 columns). Each column has a reel with a strip showing symbols in a specific order (reel layout). When a player starts a game, the machine picks a replacement reel layout for at least one reel from a set of options. Each option shows the same symbol in multiple consecutive positions but each reel layout option has a different number of these consecutive symbols. The machine then spins the reels using the chosen reel layout, stops them, and displays the outcome.
2. The game machine, as in claim 1 , the game machine further wherein each second reel layout is assigned a different associated probability of selection.
The slot machine from the previous description has a set of replacement reel layouts, and each layout has a different chance (probability) of being selected for use in a game.
3. The game machine, as in claim 2 , wherein each second reel layout has a different identical symbol.
Building on the previous slot machine description, each replacement reel layout shows a different repeating symbol (e.g., one reel layout shows repeating cherries, another shows repeating bars). The probability of selecting the reel layout is varied.
4. The game machine, as in claim 2 , wherein at least one second reel layout of the plurality of second reel layouts has a different total number of symbol positions.
Expanding on the previous slot machine description, at least one of the replacement reel layouts has a different total number of symbol positions compared to other reel layouts. Selection probability can be varied.
5. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the reel layout and the replacement reel layout differ in the number of symbol positions.
The slot machine from the first description can switch reels to other reel layouts that have a different number of symbol positions.
6. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the identical symbol within the replacement reel layout is selected from a subset of available symbols.
In the slot machine from the first description, the repeating symbol that is shown in the replacement reel layout is picked from a limited set of available symbols rather than the complete symbol set.
7. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the replacement reel layout includes a first identical symbol, the controller further configured to select a second identical symbol from the subset of available symbols and replace the second identical symbol with the first identical symbol within the replacement reel layout.
The slot machine of claim 1 starts with a replacement reel layout using a repeating symbol. It then picks a different symbol from a limited set of symbols and uses it to replace the original repeating symbol within the replacement reel layout.
8. The game machine, as in claim 6 , wherein each available symbol within the subset of symbols is assigned a probability of selection.
Building upon the slot machine which chooses symbols from a subset, each available symbol within the subset has its own associated probability of being selected to replace the identical symbol.
9. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein each second reel layout is assigned a probability of selection, and the controller is configured to select a second reel layout as a function of the probability.
The slot machine, described originally in claim 1, assigns each of the multiple replacement reel layouts a probability of selection. The machine selects the replacement reel layout to use based on these probabilities.
10. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the grid is comprised of five columns and three rows of cells.
Referencing the first slot machine description, the symbol grid on the display consists of five columns and three rows of cells.
11. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the left-most reel strip includes a reel layout.
Referring back to the initial slot machine description, the left-most reel strip of the machine initially includes a first reel layout before a replacement reel layout is used.
12. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the other reel strips includes a reel layout.
In reference to the slot machine described in the first claim, at least one of the reels, other than the leftmost reel strip, has a first reel layout before a replacement reel layout is used.
13. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to detect a trigger condition and replace the reel layout with the replacement reel layout in response to the trigger condition.
Building on the first slot machine description, the machine watches for a specific trigger condition. When this condition is met, the machine replaces the original reel layout with a new replacement reel layout.
14. The game machine, as in claim 13 , wherein the reel layout is in the left most reel strip.
Using the machine from claim 13, the trigger condition causes the replacement of the reel layout on the left-most reel strip with a replacement reel layout.
15. The game machine, as in claim 13 , wherein the reel layout is at least one other reel strip.
Building on the slot machine using a trigger condition (claim 13), the trigger condition causes the replacement of the reel layout on at least one reel strip other than the left-most with a replacement reel layout.
16. The game machine, as claim 1 , wherein the game machine selects at least one potential win symbol from each column within the grid.
The slot machine from claim 1 chooses at least one symbol from each column of the grid that could potentially be part of a winning combination.
17. The game machine, as in claim 14 , wherein a prize is awarded to a player of a game on the game machine if a predetermined arrangement of potential win symbols is displayed on a pre-defined payline on the grid at the end of a game.
In reference to claim 16, a prize is awarded if these chosen "potential win" symbols line up in a predetermined pattern (payline) on the grid after the reels stop spinning.
18. The game machine, as in claim 13 , wherein the trigger condition for a particular reel is based on the reel layout of the leftwardly preceding reel strip.
Continuing from claim 13, in this slot machine the trigger condition that causes a reel to switch layouts depends on the reel layout to the left of it.
19. The game machine, as in claim 13 , wherein the replacement of a reel layout within a reel strip constitutes a trigger condition for a subsequent reel strip.
Referring back to claim 13, when a reel layout is replaced, that replacement acts as a trigger condition for a reel to its right.
20. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the game machine is one of a plurality of gaming machines linked to a progressive jackpot controller.
Building on the first slot machine, this machine is connected to other slot machines, and they all contribute to a shared, increasing (progressive) jackpot.
21. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the game machine is a single display stand-alone gaming machine.
The slot machine from claim 1 is a self-contained unit, not connected to other machines or external systems.
