A new and distinct cultivar ofplant named ‘NCEX1’ is disclosed, characterized by evergreen, showy silver foliage, fragrant flowers, and a rounded, compact plant habit. ‘NCEX1’ is a triploid cytotype producing seedless fruit, or infrequently fruit with a small amount of non-viable seed. Plants of the new cultivar are thornless. The new cultivar is an, normally used for outdoor ornamental purposes.

Claim 1: . A new and distinct cultivar ofplant named ‘NCEX1’ as herein illustrated and described.
Complete technical specification and implementation details from the patent document.
Latin name of the genus and species:xx
Cultivar denomination: ‘NCEX1’.
The newcultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor to develop sterile and seedlesscultivars. The seed parent was the unpatented‘H2005-051-008’ (internal, induced tetraploid). The pollen parent was the unpatentedx‘Gilt Edge’. The cross resulting in this new cultivar was made during Spring 2008 in Mills River, North Carolina. The new cultivar was identified as a potentially interesting selection in the Summer of 2009, at a research nursery in Mills River, North Carolina.
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar ‘NCEX1’ by vegetative cuttings was first performed during October of 2012 at a research nursery in Mills River, North Carolina. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in three successive propagation cycles.
Plants of the new cultivar were first disclosed to third parties Jun. 25, 2024, in the United States. Plants were shown at an invitational event in Grand Haven, MI. This disclosure was made directly by the inventor or one who obtained the claimed invention directly or indirectly from the inventor. This and all public disclosures made between Jun. 25, 2024, and the filing of this application fall within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).
The cultivar ‘NCEX1’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘NCEX1’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘NCEX1’ as a new and distinctcultivar:
Plants of the new cultivar‘NCEX1’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics; however, plants of the new cultivar ‘NCEX1’ differ in the following:
Plants of the new cultivar‘NCEX1’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics; however, plants of the new cultivar ‘NCEX1’ differ in the following:
Plants of the new cultivar ‘NCEX1’ are comparable to the commercial cultivarx‘Ebbinge's Silverberry’, unpatented. The twocultivars are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however, the new cultivar ‘NCEX1’ differs in the following:
The following is a detailed description of the botanical characteristics of the new and distinctcultivar known by the denomination ‘NCEX1’. The detailed description was taken on a seven-year-old field-grown plant in 2022 in Mills River, North Carolina. All colors cited herein refer to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (The Royal Horticultural Society (R.H.S.), London, 2015, Sixth Edition). Where specific dimensions, sizes, colors, and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such characteristics are approximations or averages set forth as accurately as practicable.
