Claim 1: . A new and distinct cultivar ofplant named ‘Balsalpur154’, substantially as herein illustrated and described.
Complete technical specification and implementation details from the patent document.
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed:
Variety denomination: ‘Balsalpur154’.
This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63/709,357 filed Oct. 18, 2024.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar ofplant botanically known asand hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Balsalpur154’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Hem, the Netherlands during August 2012. The objective of the breeding program was the development ofcultivars having large flowers with attractive coloration and a compact growth habit.
The newcultivar is the result of self-pollination of proprietarybreeding selection L93-1, not patented, characterized by its medium, purple-colored flowers, medium, green-colored foliage and moderate, semi-upright growth habit. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated self-pollination during July 2013 in a controlled environment in Hem, the Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since July 2013 in Hem, the Netherlands and West Chicago, Illinois has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘Balsalpur154’ as a new and distinct cultivar ofplant:
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in having darker, purple-colored flowers and a more compact growth habit.
Of the many commercially availablecultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar isLYRICAL Blues, ‘Balyriclu’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,919. However, in side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Balyriclu’ in at least the following characteristics:
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in December 2024 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Illinois.
The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately 11-month-old plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a double polyethylene greenhouse under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in West Chicago, Illinois in 4-inch pots for approximately 8 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium. Plants were not pinched prior to transplant. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 60° F. to 65° F. (15.6° C. to 18.3° C.) during the day and approximately 55° F. to 60° F. (12.8° C. to 15.6° C.) during the night. Supplemental lighting was used. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
